The history of Egypt is the longest continuous history, as a unified state, of any country in the world. “The History of modern Egypt conventionally begins with the French expedition led by Napoleon Bonaparte and Mohammed Ali's subsequent assumption of power in 1801. In 1882, Egypt became part of the British sphere of influence in the region, a situation that conflicted with Egypt's position as part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1914, the country became a British protectorate and achieved independence in 1922. British troops, however, remained in the country until 1936 after the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty, and finally with the declaration of a republic in 1952.
